Group of Parasols by John Singer Sargent |
Group
of Parasols (or A Siesta)
What
a day that landed on my calendar
So
many months ago
I
shopped and planned and worried and worked
To
make the day just so
I
slept not much at all last night
The
plans were too intense
My
hair, my hat, my gloves, I might
Just
faint from all the stress
Yet
all went on without a hitch
The
men were well behaved
We
ate, we laughed, we strolled the lawn
Let’s
sit a while in shade
But
oh the deadly drowsy touch
Of
sleep has come to be
We
dropped the sunlit parasols
And
yawned…to let it be
Its
own guide, master, determiner
Of
what will happen now
We
drift away to summon it
A
siesta we allow.
